I am sure you have already seen some of these UV coated business cards. You were just not so sure how to call them. I am referring to the high-glossy, ultra-shiny business cards. They look really expensive because they look thicker, classier, and elegant. But they are really not that expensive, they only seem like it. It is possible to have a UV coating applied during the printing process. The coating makes the colors really pop, so this is your chance to create some very colorful, vibrant cards.
Technically speaking, ultra-violet cured coatings are applied over ink printed on paper and dried by exposure to UV radiation. UV coatings can be formulated up to 100 percent solids so that they have no volatile component that contributes to pollution. The high solids level also allows for the coating to be applied in very thin films and can be formulated to a wide variety of gloss ranges.
Due to the normally high solids content of UV coating/varnish the surface of the cured film can be extremely reflective and glossy. Most printers prefer to apply UV coatings on heavier weights of paper and on smooth un-coated papers. UV can be applied on spot locations called spot UV or spot gloss (see also our post on spot UV business cards) of the paper or by flooding the page. This spot coating application can deepen the color of the selected area such as logos or some texts that you would like to highlight. Drying is virtually instantaneous when exposed to the correct level of UV light. A printed page with UV coating applied can be very shiny or flattened to a matte finish. A good example of UV coated paper is photo paper sold for home printing projects. UV coatings that are not fully cured can have a slightly sticky feeling.
